Rose Platter bakes Sour Milk Cake!
Have you ever wondered what to do with sour milk? Don’t throw it in the dustbin! Here is a recipe for making cake with it by Carolyn Jabs in her book Re/Uses.
Her mother made this Wacky Cake when she had some sour milk to use up!
The recipe: sift one and a half cups of flour, three fourth cup of sugar, one teaspoon of soda, one teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons of cocoa into an 8 inch pan. Make 3 holes in the dry ingredients and put one teaspoon of vanilla into one hole, 5 tablespoons of oil into another, and one tablespoon of vinegar into the third.
Pour one cup of sour milk over the top and mix well. Bake for thirty minutes at 350 degrees. She says though it sounds wacky, the cake tastes delicious! She reminds us that sour milk can also be used in pancakes, waffles, doughnuts etc. Just check your recipe books. In India we make paneer out of sour milk, or a dessert called shrikhand that is eaten with puris. Paneer is a kind of cheese that goes well with rice, curries, vegetables, salads etc.
You can also add some pretty rose petals to the cake as icing or even under the batter to get a taste of roses! Or you can put the petals over it like a pretty decoration!
