Did you know that buttermilk is lower in fat than regular milk? It is a healthier alternative to milk, cream and mayonnaise in everything from salad dressings to baked foods!

Buttermilk is one of the best calcium sources you can find. A cup of buttermilk made from skim milk has more than 285 milligrams of calcium, about 29 per cent of the Daily Value.

A cup of buttermilk made from skim milk has about 2 grams of fat. Buttermilk made with reduced-fat (2 per cent) milk contains 5 grams of fat. By contrast, 1 cup of regular milk has approximately 8 grams of fat. If you can make this small change – replace some of the milk in your diet with buttermilk, you can cut large amounts of fat from your diet.

You can buy buttermilk in skim, low-fat (1 per cent) and reduced fat version.

But milk is important as well as it keeps bones strong, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. It also reduces the risk of stroke. Choose a cup of low-fat (1 per cent milk) and skim milk. Both will keep you healthy without the fat!
